" I was introduced to Mike a few months ago – I was told he had a clutch of songs together and wanted to develop them by a trusted mutual friend. As soon as I’d checked out his captivating demo videos for some of the songs I quickly realised I was being introduced to a most singular talent with many aspects. First you discover the voice – a glorious instrument that to me simultaneously manages to combine the tone and musicality of a Gregory Porter or Gil Scott Heron, the dramatics perhaps of Williard White and a strong hint of Jamaica delivered with the tightest of focus. It’s exceptional and as I’ve worked with Mike and uncovered more and more layers I never cease to be impressed.

But then you start to dig in to the lyrics and realise that there’s a serious, unique, passionate writing voice there too – one that could stand along side the great Black British voices such as Akala, Roger Robinson, Benjamin Zephaniah or Linton Kewsi Johnson and talk in equally political yet poetical, lyrical terms to willing listeners.

These voices have never been more necessary than now. So since August Mike and me have been working on songs – sending files to and from our respective home studios and it’s been a joy to build his sound world for him around his lyrics and melodies. We’re both ‘24/7’ people and the flow of ideas has been exhilarating – and also, importantly, efficiently done. There’s a strong creative team developing around Mike ready to bring his vision to life in a big screen style – I’m pleased to be a central part of that.

My background is long and varied – I’ve had my own bands tour the world and chart successfully, particularly in the jazz world and I’ve also written considerably for TV and other media. These days I’m more involved in composing for contemporary dance and ballet . There’s another interesting project that bleeds in somewhat to the work I’m doing with Mike - I’ve mentored my daughter’s trail blazing urban punk band Nova Twins from scratch to a place where they’re now touring the world too (when there isn’t a pandemic!) and making a serious name for themselves.

A lot of the themes cross over from that project actually as they’re really another manifestation of radical Black British culture – working with Mike in some ways feels like a mature continuation of that project".
